Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook" by James E. Amrhein. 3rd edition; 442 pp.: $25.00 plus $1.50 shipping and handling (orders from California add $1.50 sales tax). Masonry Institute of America, 2550 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90057.
The third edition of Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook has been greatly expanded over previous editions and brought up-to-date to the 1976 Uniform Building Code requirements. It includes lateral force design examples for wind, seismic and earth forces. There are 72 design examples, including the S.I. (Systems Internationale) metric conversion values and tables.
The work is a handbook with computer-developed tables, design aids and diagrams providing the necessary information and shortcuts for quick design of reinforced masonry systems.
Step-by-step examples of many conditions encountered in structural design are included. Complete masonry designs of an industrial building, a seven-story highrise, a ten-ft.-high cantilever retaining wall, and a 20-ft.-high counterfort retaining wall make this manual an indispensable tool for the designer.
Walkway Surfaces: Measurement of Slip Resistance" (STP 649). 117 pp.: $8.00. American Society for Testing & Materials, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103.
Falls on walkways are a major cause of personal injury, and cause and prevention of such falls are receiving an increasing amount of attention. Recently this attention has intensified as design, manufacturing, code, safety and consumer interests attempt to produce, specify and maintain safe walkways.
The new Walkway Surfaces: Measurement of Slip Resistance released by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), is a compilation of papers that describe the current work in the area of slip resistance measurement and related topics.
The papers focus on directions for further research. The dissemination in one volume of diverse research on the complex problem of pedestrian safety is contained within the 117 pages of the text.
