Masonry Institute of W. Pennsylvania
Honors Pittsburgh Architects

The Masonry Institute of Western Pennsylvania recently honored Pittsburgh Chapter AIA architects for their award-winning designs at the 1978 "Excellence In Masonry Design" Awards dinner. The Institute gives this recognition to honor works of distinction by registered architects and brings to public attention outstanding building and project designs.

Winner of this year's Excellence Award was the firm of Deeter. Ritchey. Sippel Associates of Pittsburgh for its design of the St. Francis General Hospital Medical/Parking complex. The mason contractor was Cost Brothers. Inc., Pittsburgh.

The architects' comment: "Brick with colored mortar used on the first and second floors and corner stair towers was selected to match the brick of adjacent hospital buildings. Curved brick were used on the corner stair towers, and special shapes were cast for use on the round columns. The brick detailing reduces this massive structure to a more human scale of the surrounding residential neighborhood."

A Merit Award certificate was presented to architect Thomas Stephen Terpack for his design of the rectory addition to Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church in Pittsburgh.

Marini Construction Co., Pittsburgh, was the mason contractor.

The judging was carried out at Kent State University by A. Peters Opperman. AIA, director of the School of Architecture, who was chairman and presented the awards at the dinner. Other jurors were Joseph Tuchman, FAIA; William H. Collins, AIA, and John Snavely, mason contractor.
