PROPERTY/CASUALTY INSURANCE

Safety groups, these programs are available from a limited number of companies. The name comes from the emphasis on safety, utilizing loss prevention techniques. Each safety group is comprised of individuals in homogeneous areas (e.g.. masons or electricians or building service contractors) who are above average in their insurability. All results for that group are pooled, losses paid out of that pool and, after the deduction of administrative fees by the insurance company, whatever premium is left is returned to the members of the safety group. Best yet, no additional funds need be paid in if there is not enough to pay all claims this comes out of the insurance companies' funds.

It can't be over-emphasized how important good communication with your agent is to the development of a good insurance program. First of all you must make sure that he has a clear picture of your operation so that he can recommend the best insurance plan for your particular situation. Reporting of new job starts to your agent is an important requirement of most insurance contracts.

The mason contractor who is involved in large building projects will look to his agent for regular advice on loss prevention, safety and working conditions. It's not unusual for the large contractor to make his insurance agent a member of his construction management team and have the agent review the job site weekly.

Finally, you should know how to communicate with your insurance company's underwriters. These are the people who to a great extent set your rates, determine coverage availability and accept or reject your requests for coverage. Often the underwriters who review policy applications know very little about the activities and operations of your specific company. Remember that you have the opportunity to communicate this type of information to your insurance company at any time through your agent. You also have an opportunity to explain how your company works when a safety engineer from the insurance company pays you a visit, when the company auditor comes out to go over payroll, receipts, equipment lists. etc., or when a claims person comes out to adjust your claim, or finally when you send in reports to the company on changes in your operation.

These all represent excellent opportunities for you to communicate your management skills and the general insurability of your operation.
