General Portland Reports Improved First Quarter
General Portland, Inc., Dallas, Tx., has announced improved results for the first quarter of 1979. Net sales for the period were $47.8 million, up 15% from $41.7 million in the first quarter of 1978. Weather-related conditions traditionally make the first quarter General Portland's weakest of the year, a company spokesman said.
Rosensteel New Chairman Of Apprentice Advisory Council in Arizona
Paul H. Rosensteel, executive director of the Arizona Masonry Guild, has been elected chairman of the statewide Apprenticeship Advisory Council of the Arizona Department of Economic Security. The 13-member Council is empowered by state statute to recommend policies, rules and regulations governing all apprenticeship programs throughout the state. It is principally involved with promoting the development and expansion of apprenticeship and training programs through the voluntary cooperation of labor and management, and in establishing standards for such programs in all skilled trades and occupations. Rosensteel, who has served on the Council since 1965, has held administrative positions in the masonry construction industry for the past 25 years. He has been executive director of the Arizona Masonry Guild since 1961.
Eugene George Elected Chairman of IMI
Eugene George, president of the Mason Contractors Association of America and one of the leading mason contractors in Canada and the United States, has been elected chairman of the board of trustees of the International Masonry Institute, Washington, D.C. C. Dewitt Brown, Jr., a Dallas, Texas, mason contractor, has been elected vice chairman of the board. George succeeds Charles F. Velardo of Newton Highlands, Mass., who stepped down after two years as chairman. Velardo will remain an IMI trustee. IMI is an international masonry promotion trust jointly created by the Mason Contractors Association of America and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen. It conducts advertising and promotional programs to expand and maintain masonry markets in both the U.S. and Canada. The Institute is governed by a board consisting of five trustees representing the Mason Contractors Association of America, and five advisors representing the Bricklayers' International Union.
George is head of G & A Masonry, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, one of the largest mason contracting firms in that country. The company also has branch operations in the United States. George has been a trustee of IMI since the Institute was founded in 1970. In addition to his service with IMI and MCAA, George has been a trustee of the Bricklayers & Trowel Trades International Pension Fund, chairman of the International Masonry Industry All-Weather Committee, and a member of the Canadian Masonry Research Council. Brown is president of Dee Brown Masonry, Inc. in Dallas. He is currently chairman of the Texas Masonry Institute, an IMI affiliate, and has been president of MCAA's Dallas Chapter.
