funds, the project of renovating the building and adding to it was completed in April, 1979. "Our objectives were to retain the character of the original building and match the addition to it," said Norman A. Kline, AIA, principal of the architectural firm of Graheck. Bell, Kline & Brown, of Traverse City and Marquette, Mich.
The original structure was in a poor state of repair. Accordingly, the Chicago common brick were cleaned, tuckpointed and repainted, deteriorated wood windows replaced, and the interior refurbished. For the addition, a three-story structure of masonry bearing-wall design, a locally-produced concrete brick unit was selected for the exterior because it closely matched the texture of the original brick. Then it was painted in the same warm gray color of the older building.
Exterior detailing of the addition-including window arches, architraves, and horizontal bands of masonry also was designed to complement the work on the existing building. The composite-wall system includes 2-inch rigid insulation backed by standard concrete masonry units, which are painted to provide the interior finish in some areas of the building.

Young Israel of Southfield
Young Israel, an orthodox synagogue located in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, was completed in May. 1979. Its design was meant to evoke the ancient Second Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.
