A 35 YEAR OLD
ESSICK MIXER
IS NO
ACCIDENT!

We Build 'Em That Way
On Purpose!

The plaster and mortar mixer shown in this ad is a thirty-five year old Essick Model 141D. We picked it because at 35 it's still going strong for a busy contractor who doesn't really care how old it is, only how well it works. We also picked it because it illustrates an important point: Essick mixers are built to last and we can prove it! And here's something even more important to you. The old Essick 141D was good (and still is), but today's Essick mixers are even better. Today's Essick mixers offer all the features of the old 141D, the rugged construction and durability, completely sealed transmission and clutch for positive engagement between engine and paddleshaft, plus such outstanding features as self-adjusting, spring-loaded paddleshaft packings that never require greasing. Yesterday's Essick mixers were great. Today's are even better! Write for free information!

APPRENTICESHIP & TRAINING

vate contractors. Trainees are tested prior to leaving the center, an activity which fosters pride in themselves and in their instructor.

"Some of them can do journeyman work right now," Bader says.

A good deal of Job Corps instructors' responsibility is to act as coordinator in job placement opportunities. Bader works closely with local unions and business agents and, to date, has placed 90 percent of his trainees. It costs the taxpayer about $7,000 to house, feed and train an individual for the year's stay, Bader says, and he is determined that his placements will repay the debt-as taxed, productive workers-within four years.

"This is the finest program I've seen, or been involved in, period," says Bader. He has been in the industry for 31 years.

While these various training schools don't guarantee that their participants will enter masonry as highly-motivated, consummately-skilled craftworkers, their very existence has a positive effect on the quality of labor available today. Bricklaying is an old and proud tradition; rewards are commensurate with the effort put forth. If a young man or woman has demonstrated perseverance enough to go through training just to become an apprentice, chances are good that he or she won't quit to join the circus when it comes to town.

New Cement Plant for Flintkote

A 114-ft.-high circular pre-blending dome and storage hall (left) highlight construe construction to date at the $42 million expansion of the Redding (Calif.) cement plant of Flintkote Cement Co., Calaveras Division. A new 286-ft.-long suspension preheater/precalciner kiln, a new preheater tower, and roller mill building are also major segments of the expansion program. Due for completion later this year, the expansion will more than double the plant's production capacity to 600,000 tons annually. Calaveras, headquartered in San Francisco, is a major producer and marketer of Portland cement products in northern California. Nevada, Oregon and southern Washington.

Another Activity

Little Jimmy came home in a bad state. He had a black eye, numerous cuts and scratches, and his clothes were a mess. His mother was shocked at the sight. With tears in her eyes, she rebuked him: "Haven't I told you not to play with that mean boy down the street?" "Mom," answered Jimmy, with a look of obvious disgust, "do I look like I've been playing with anybody?"
