Sales, Income Records

For General Portland

General Portland Inc. Dallas, Texas, announced that its sales and net income have reached record levels in 1979 for the second consecutive year.

Net sales of $277.2 million were up 13 percent from $245.9 million in 1978. Income of $23.2 million from continuing operations, or $3.37 per share, rose 29 percent from the $18.0 million, or $2.63 per share, reported in 1978.

General Portland's chairman and chief executive officer, James B. Lendrum, credited the company's successful year in part to the "significant improvement in General Portland's concrete, aggregate and real estate development operations."

ANSI Publishes '80

The standards listed provide dimensions, ratings, terminology, symbols, test methods, and performance and safety requirements for materials, equipment, components and products in a wide range of fields including construction.

Institute non-members may purchase copies at $7.50 each from ANSI's Sales Department, 1430 Broadway, New York, NY 10018. Purchasers will receive at no additional charge copies of all supplements issued in 1980.

Louisiana Construction

Industry Outlook Good

The outlook for Louisiana's non-residential construction industry in 1980 is for continued high levels of spending and employment, according to Robert H. Boh, newly elected president of the Associated General Contractors of Louisiana.

Serving for 1980 with Boh as leaders of the contractors group are Joseph T. Donnelly, Westlake, La., vice president, and Robert Farnsworth, Metairie, La., treasurer.

"While every industry tends to view itself as pivotal to the economy, construction of commercial, industrial and public works projects is uniquely so," said Boh. "Construction, with its many suppliers of materials, equipment and services, is one of the largest employers in the state. Construction wages, especially in the skilled trades and crafts, are substantially higher than those in other state industries.

"For these reasons alone, a healthy construction industry implies good economic news for all business, from retailing to banking."
