BIA's Texas House: Contemporary Design with Regional Roots
Courtyard to the Texas House combines wood decking and a brick patio laid in sand. Designed by architects Ford, Powell & Carson of San Antonio, the house utilizes the courtyard to create a "green house" effect in surrounding rooms by catching the early morning sun on winter days. Generous overhangs help shade the house on summer days.
The Texas House, built by the Brick Institute of America and Southern Living magazine, is one example of borrowing the best from the past. This house is definitely for today's lifestyles, but draws much inspiration from the early homes of the Southwest. Native materials, like a golden-toned brick, underscore the regional flavor. The brick, used indoors as well as for exterior walls, was made in Texas. Its color and texture, with a handmade look, is used extensively in the Southwest.
The Texas House incorporates many energy and space conservation features. A combination of blank brick walls and large protective overhangs on southwest and northwest walls help reduce peak load requirements on cooling and heating equipment. An energy efficient fireplace design minimizes the loss of heated air from the living room. And a wood-burning stove in the family room is backed by a brick wall which retains heat and radiates it back into the room.
Announce No. 2 Fuel Oil Substitute
A series of petroleum-based substitutes, one of which is a replacement for industrial #2 fuel oil, is being introduced by Fluids Engineering Corp., Whiting. Ind. Called FE-200, the product has been used for the past year by a number of industrial/commercial establishments in the Chicago area and in South Carolina, according to the company. It is now being made available throughout much of the Midwest and Southeast.
Fluids Engineering Corp. has been selling its FE-200 to metal processing firms as well as brick, clay and cement plants. The company says that operators of kilns and rotary kiln dryers who customarily burn conventional No. 2 fuel oil have found the substitute fuel "especially satisfactory," with better BTU readings and lower cost.
