Peoria Church Design Blends Strength with Theological Principles via Brick Masonry
The strength of brick masonry used in the fan-shaped plan of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Peoria, III., ties the theological principles of the early Church to its present ideals. An interior colonnade of solid brick piers gives function to a perimeter aisle, with the 14 brick columns depicting the 14 stations of the cross.
Two massive brick piers on either side of the altar form the support and strength of the basic structure. Large steel members spring from these piers to support the balance of the roof structure. These piers are similar yet different, and give indication of the two main mysteries of the Catholic faith. A 50-ft. high masonry bell tower is incorporated as a conterbalance to the two main steel beams.
Brick masonry flows from outside to inside in a continuous wall pattern to provide control, beauty and maintenance-free walls.
Some perimeter walls are 6-in. wide, single-wythe masonry with 2-in. furring. insulation and cedar board finish on the interior. All brick are nominal 3 in. high by 12 in. long. Interior facing brick is 4 in. thick.
Fan-shaped Design with Angle Walls
The fan-shaped plan produced many angle walls, with the running bond helping to keep these walls neat and trim. A soldier course lintel spans all openings. The exterior angles in plan and in elevation aid the building in relation to site, while the brick masonry shows aesthetics and strength to the exterior.
The architect for the project was William A. Bibo Corporation Architects of Peoria, with Nauman Masonry, Inc. (MCAA), Metamora. Ill., the mason contractor. The brick is Coachman Modified Norwegian supplied by Peoria Brick & Tile Co., East Peoria, Ill.
Lack of Head Gear Among Workers Leading Cause of Head Injuries
Eight out of 10 workers surveyed who suffered head injuries were not wearing head protection when the accident took place, the Labor Department reports.
Moreover, the Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics says that of those injured, more than half said their jobs did not require such protection. An equal proportion of 1,033 injured workers included in the survey said hard hats were not normally used in the type of work they did.
The typical head injury was caused by a falling object. although the head striking a nonmoving object, being hit by a swinging object, and being struck by flying objects also took heavy tolls, the Department says.
