Beginner's Guide to
Construction Equipment
Auction Terminology

An amusing list of tongue-in-cheek terminology
that appears in many used car ads was drawn up by
Leo Needham and recently appeared in the antique
car journal, Old Cars Weekly. The column was spot-
ted by MCAA Secretary W. C. Dengtinger, Jr., who
thought that many of the terms applied equally to
some construction equipment auctions, where hard-
sell auctioneers push their clients' wares with alac-
rity.

Bill writes, "Someone once said, 'Paint it yellow
and put some stripes on it, and a contractor will buy
it!' There must be some truth to that, as contractors
seem to spend a good deal of their time participating
in construction equipment auctions. These auctions
are held in a picnic atmosphere, with lots of beer,
hot dogs, yelling, and what have you. They are lots
of fun, but never has the phrase 'caveat emptor' held
more meaning for the beginner."

Here is Dentinger's adaptation of some of the
terms that could use a bit of "truth in advertising"-

Original-Means what it says, nothing was ever re-
paired.

Original Finish-Means original finish has been
protected by original dirt. Also means, never been
cleaned.

Every Possible Option-Do not ignore the obvious
option, meaning the option to purchase at a later
date.

Running Condition-This refers to the condition of
the owner and auctioneer after you have pur-
chased the equipment.

Won't Last Long at This Price-Too wordy
"Won't last long!" will do.

Priced for Quick Sale-Owner and auctioneer will
have to get out of town after this sale.

26,000 Careful Hours The other 200.000 hours
were not so careful.

Never Driven Over 15-Refers to U.S. Highway 15.

Near Mint The previous owner lived in Denver, a
few blocks from the U.S. Mint.

Mint-Equipment is very similar to the candy and
has a hole in the middle.

Garaged Nights-Nightly repairs were necessary.

Dream Machine-Nightmare.

Illness Forces Sale Sick of repair bills on this ma-
chine!

Air Conditioned-Cab is missing.

Milestone Model-This is a typographical error.
Should read millstone model.

Towable So is the Queen Mary.

20 Miles to the Gallon-That comes out to five miles.
per wheel.

Exhaustive Rebuilding-New tailpipe.

Rare Like in "under done." Design engineer quit
and no one stopped production.

Solid Engine's froze and can't be moved.

Lost Storage Bank refused to repossess the ma-
chine but did take the warehouse.

Real Beauty Owner/auctioneer has a wry sense of
humor.

Sweet Running-A jug of molasses has been poured
in the crankcase.

A Steal at $22,000-Yeah, but who's doing the steal-
ing?

Zero Hours Since Overhaul-We sunk $4,500 into
the S.O.B., and it still won't run.
