Salt Lake City Symphony Hall Top Winner In Utah Architectural Competition

Five buildings received honors as Outstanding New Masonry Structures In Utah in juried competition sponsored by Utah Masonry Research and Promotion, Salt Lake City. The awards program was open to all masonry buildings completed within the past two years.

The winning selections were made by a panel of architects comprised of Robert L. Bliss, dean, University of Utah Graduate School of Architecture, Salt Lake City: Norman W. Fladmo, campus architect. Brigham Young University, Provo, and Neil Astle, AIA, Salt Lake City.

Awards were presented to the owners, designers and constructors of the buildings at a "Masonry In Utah Week" banquet in Salt Lake City. May 14. at the Little America Hotel.

The top honor, the Masonry Award of Excellence, was presented to the magnificent new Salt Lake City Symphony Hall and Art Center (see cover photo). The architectural jury termed the facility the "most outstanding public building completed in Utah in many years. A bold form, striking in light and shadow. It is sheathed with a unique brick, laid with fine craftsmanship."

An Excellence In Block award was given to the Interwest Office Building and Warehouse, Salt Lake City. "This project sets an example for both design and workmanship using an inexpensive and common material in an uncommonly handsome way," according to the judges.

Clearfield High School Gymnasium, Clearfield, Utah, was winner of the Excellence in Brick award. The jury's comment: "A straightforward solution to a straightforward problem, well designed and well constructed."

Awards of Merit were presented to the American Savings & Loan Brickyard Office and the Cathedral of the Madeleine; the latter was recognized for historical preservation. Both structures are in Salt Lake City.
