Presents Design Awards to Area Architects, Contractors

The Atlanta design firm of Porter/Kelly, Inc. is the 1980 recipient of the Excellence In Masonry Design Award presented annually by the Masonry Institute of Atlanta in its architectural awards program.

The Excellence Award, as well as two Outstanding Merit Awards, were given by the Institute at a regular meeting of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Institute of Architects on May 15.

Porter/Kelly was cited for its design of the Harrison Publishing Company building in Atlanta. The general contractor for the project was Bob Mathis Construction Co. C.L. Cook Co., Inc. was the mason contractor.

Jova, Daniels, Busby, Inc. received a Merit Award for the Charter Federal Savings & Loan building in LaGrange. Ga. Hall. Norris & Marsh, Inc. was honored for the Food Service Building of West Georgia College in Carrollton. Both architectural firms are based in Atlanta.

Batson-Cook Co. was the general contractor on the Charter Federal Savings & Loan project, with Daryl Williams the mason contractor. The general on the Food Service Building was Conner Brothers Construction Co., with masonry by Wallace Wade Masonry Contracting Co.

The judges who evaluated the competition consisted of architects from Nashville, Tenn. Clay Hickerson, AIA, of Clay Hickerson Associates, chaired the jury.

Other judges included Joe A. Edgens, AIA, of Joe A. Edgens Associates: Thomas M. Carnell, AIA, Carter/Klemt & Associates, and Edward H. Street, AIA, of Street & Street, Architects.

Outstanding Merit Award-Charter Federal Savings & Loan Building. Jury's comment: "An outstanding building featuring the use of mass in a very unique brick arch. The building is sited to take advantage of the topography and is most outstanding in architectural detail."

Outstanding Merit Award-Food Service Building, West Georgia College. Jury's comment: "This building is exemplified by discipline and the use of brick and masonry to present a pleasing atmosphere for the basic function of the building."
