HAMILTON LAKES PROJECT
continued from page 24
Local crews (bricklayers/laborers) provided by Hansen & Hempel Inc., Elmhurst, III., lift the panels off the truck by crane using a specially designed cradle. Each hotel wall panel may weigh as much as 10,500 lbs. and measure up to 26 ft. long by 10 ft. high. Once the panels are lifted into place, they are transferred to leveling cables. Workers carefully align each panel in a row and apply a temporary tack-weld to hold it in place.
After a whole row has been aligned, workers come back for final detailing. Only then is a permanent weld applied.
Hansen & Hemple pioneered brick panel construction in the Greater Chicago area. Its projects include such prestigious shopping centers as Oak Brook Mall, Yorktown, Hawthorne Center, Orland Square, Riverside Mall, Lincoln Mall, Market Place, River Oaks and Woodfield Mall. The firm has received "Excellence In Masonry" craftsmanship awards for three different projects entered in recent midwestern architectural design competiton.
Hamilton Lakes developer Trammell Crow shows his satisfaction at receiving a special plaque with the September 1979 cover of "Masonry" magazine depicting The Loews Anatole Dallas Hotel. The luxurious, all-masonry hotel, another of Crow's noteworthy developments, was the headquarters for MCAA's 1979 International Masonry Conference & Trade Show.
With speeded construction, the office tower is scheduled for completion late in 1980; the hotel in July of 1981. "The Hamilton Lakes complex will certainly be a showpiece for Chicago's suburbs when complete," says Dua. "And part of that beauty, we feel, can be attributed to the preassembled panels. Now designers can create sculptured walls, sloped soffits and sills, returns, and unusual bond patterns in masonry. Indeed, this provides a new dimension for an old material."

What Does Your Association Mean to You?
"Years ago, one knowledgeable association member characterized the exchange of ideas in this manner: 'You have a dollar and I have a dollar. We swap dollars. No one benefits. But, I have an idea and you have an idea and we exchange ideas. Now you have two ideas and so do I.'" -Harold J. Ashe, Oregon Contractor.
