Awards of Excellence in Masonry Engineering were given to two firms-Richard Weingardt Consulting Engineers, Inc., Denver, for the Mountain Bell Training & Conference Center, Lakewood, and Morgan & Associates, Colorado Springs, for the Centennial Plaza Apartments in Colorado Springs.
National State Bank, Boulder, Colo. The renovation to this 20,000 sq. ft. building involved restored stone masonry, new brick veneer, glazing and brick pavers. The 15,000 sq. ft. addition used a precast concrete frame with glass infill, matching brick veneer, pavers and landscape walls. The landmark downtown bank was built in 1899.
Mountain Bell Training & Conference Center, Lakewood, Colo. Located on a 20-acre site in suburban southwest Denver, Bell's new center has three wings for administrative offices, classrooms and live-in units. Brick masonry was used in the interior as well as on exterior walls. A prime reason for using masonry, according to the engineers, was energy savings. As a passive solar collector, brick better controls the summer heat and winter cold, they noted.
The U.S. Geological Survey Office Lab Building, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colo. Elegantly faced with brick veneer, this impressive structure was one of the first in the nation to follow stringent new GSA total energy use guidelines. It uses only about 20 percent of the total energy consumed by an office building of comparable size.
The Centennial Plaza Apartments is an 11-story housing facility for the elderly owned by the Housing Authority of Colorado Springs, Colo. The 99-unit building has a box frame with bearing walls and shear walls. Reinforced concrete masonry units were selected over other structural materials based on extensive cost analysis. Ultimate design strength for the concrete block was varied at specified levels to resist lateral wind and seismic forces.
