Eight Greater Milwaukee Area construction projects displaying unique use of masonry products were recently cited with "excellence" awards by the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin. According to Norbert J. Hynek, Institute executive vice president, the awarding of the citations this year was made by the Institute's board of directors. He said that the winning projects would be used in the Institute's education and promotion programs during the year. The awards are all of equal value.

The projects selected were the Guaranty Savings & Loan Association (pictured on this month's cover), Miller Brewing Co. executive office building, Columbia Hospital, Van Buren Building and Bradford Place Apartments, all in Milwaukee: St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Brookfield, Wis.: Kuettner Oldsmobile, Waukesha, Wis., and Ad Tape & Label Co., Menomonee Falls, Wis.

The architect for the Guaranty Savings building was Tannenbaum Associates, Architects & Planners, Inc. of Milwaukee. Principal A.A. Tannenbaum, AIA, commented: "The client felt it important to convey an image of the institution's strength, solidity and progressiveness in a dignified and distinctive manner.

"Brick was used extensively on the exterior and interior, not only because it seemed in harmony with the institution's image and objectives, but it adapted well to the distinctive curvilinear design configurations.

"The masonry incorporated into the structure is expected to successfully minimize maintenance, convey a feeling of warmth and, last but not least, the resultant building exterior envelope has pleased all involved because its proven economical energy performance has exceeded their optimistic expectations."

Standard size brick was used throughout the structure, with colored mortar selected to blend with the basic terra cotta brick tone. A number of special brick shapes were employed, including radial brick for columns and an angular cut for window sills.

Brick is also used widely in the interior, with brick pavers in the vestibule and heavily traveled parts of the lobby. A brick identification sign is set prominently a short distance from the Association headquarters. The sign relates to the building through the use of brick and helps generate attention to the building, located along a high-traffic road directly across from one of the largest shopping centers in the Milwaukee area.

The general and mason contractor for the project was Peters Construction Co., with Mingesz and Michl, Inc. the structural engineer. Cover photography by Harry Seaman, Photo Comm. Milwaukee.
