With many features drawn from traditional Islamic, or Egyptian, archetypes, including a courtyard, this two-story summer home in Agamy, Egypt is a design for contemporary living and a recipient of the 1980 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
Incorporating traditional Upper Egyptian (Nubian) architectural forms into a contemporary living design was the goal in building this summer home in Agamy, Egypt. Architect Abdel Wahed El-Wakil designed the house for a Cairo businessman.
An agricultural training center (above and left) in Nianing, Senegal, using a prototype structure designed by UNESCO architectural experts, also received an Aga Khan Award. Based on a short-span, barrel vault concept, the buildings are made from locally produced materials and represent a rural architecture in an Islamic culture.
