"An Economic Model for Passive Solar Designs in Commercial Environments" by Jeanne W. Powell. $4.75. Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402. Order by Stock No. 003-003-02203-9.

This new work offers a method for evaluating the cost effectiveness of passive solar designs for commercial buildings, a system recently developed by the National Bureau of Standards. The method provides a new analytical tool for the building community, policy makers, financiers and investors.

The method also considers such potential economic benefits as: higher rental income from commercial space: lower electric lighting costs; reduced heating costs, and higher property values and extended property life.

The author of the report, economist Jeanne W. Powell, suggests further areas of research for passive solar systems including the measurement of acoustical, aesthetic, comfort and health effects.

"Structures: Fundamental Theory & Behavior" by Richard M. Gutkowski, Ph.D., P.E. 528 pp.; 447 illustrations; 6-% x 10; $34.50. Publication date: November, 1980. Van Nostrand Reinhold, 135 W. 50th St., New York, NY 10020.

This new reference on structural analysis is believed to be the first book of its kind to provide balanced coverage of both geometric and computer methods. The author, an associate professor of civil engineering at Colorado State University, discusses subjects of critical importance to a structural engineer starting out in the field.

The book also includes an entire chapter on fundamental geometric concepts of structural analysis such as small deflection theory, degrees of freedom, and the role of axial deformation in frame analysis. Each of these is discussed in elementary terms that promote complete comprehension.
