Huge Trombe Wall Conserves Energy
Although it appears to be a conventional rectangular building, the Obermeyer Corporate Offices in Aspen, Colo., feature passive solar energy as the primary heat source. Architects Copland Hagman Yaw Ltd. of Aspen designed the building with what is believed to be the nation's largest Trombe-type wall using a selective surface that absorbs sunlight without radiating or losing heat.
Measuring 120 ft. long by 20 ft. high, the wall is a passive solar collector made of heavy masonry and glazed on the outside with iron content glass, which permits maximum solar radiation to be transmitted to stainless steel plates, the selective surface. The wall is constructed of 8 in. insulated concrete masonry units with the outside joints between the units left untooled. This creates air turbulence and increases the system's efficiency.
Copland Hagman Yaw Ltd. was named the winner in the Industrial-Built category of Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp.'s 1980 Energy Conservation Awards Program for its design of the Obermeyer Offices.
