The U.S. Geological Survey Office Lab Building at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden was recently bestowed an Excellence Award in Masonry Architectural Design by the Colorado Masonry Institute (Masonry, July 1980). One of the first in the nation to follow the GSA's stringent total energy use guidelines, the building utilizes only about 20 percent of the total energy consumed by an office building of comparable size. Johnson-Hopson & Partners, Inc. of Denver was the architect, with masonry by D. E. Farr & Associates of Denver.
