Dayton Forensic Psychiatric Unit.
This maximum security center involved a large loadbearing job which required a close working relationship with the mason contractor. While not sacrificing anything to its main purpose (it looks and is a tough building), the structure has a calm air and dignity achieved through intelligent siting. By hollowing out the landscape (much of this large project is not visible from ground level), the architect was able to maintain the low profile which met the campus-type requirement.

The final design decision was to use face brick on lightweight block back-up because of durability and the maintenance-free capabilities on both the remodel portion and addition to the existing facilities. Masonry met all of the architect's requirements and proved to be less expensive than all other materials investigated. The resultant savings to the owner were approximately $110,000.

Masonry Design Awards Presented in Dayton
Six winners were selected as 1980's most outstanding designs from the entries submitted in the 8th annual Masonry Architectural Awards competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Dayton.

Nearly 300 persons attended the annual awards banquet and dance at the Miami Valley Country Club. John T. Joyce, president of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftsment, Washington, D.C., was the keynote speaker and presented the awards.
