Jerry Dufour (left), newly elected secretary of MCAA, chaired a slide presentation and panel discussion of "Metal Studs-Their Pros and Cons." Pictured are panelists Robert H. Hatch (above), Alan H. Yorkdale (below, at mike) of BIA, and Dr. Russell H. Brown, Clemson University (far right).

MCAA CONFERENCE
continued from page 14

Several types of ties and their fastening systems were tested in cyclic tension and compression. Based on the stiffness characteristics demonstrated in the tests, an adjustable wire tie was selected for use in the lateral load test walls.

The lateral load test phase of the project included six (6) separate walls built on a reinforced concrete frame, with the steel studs attached to the "slab" and the brick veneer resting on shelf-angles attached to the "spandrels." This configuration resulted in a brick element that is longer (taller) than the steel stud backup element, an approximate typical field situation.

Three (3) of the walls were tested with positive pressure and three (3) with negative pressure. Before the pressure was exerted and at increments throughout the test duration, each specimen was subjected to a water permeance test similar to ASTM E 514 to determine the effect of loading on resistance of the wall system to water permeance. Results of the tests showed very little correlation between water permeance and the load levels the walls were subjected to.

Using the results of this research project, along with a computer model that was developed simultaneously to simulate the behavior of this wall system, it is anticipated that a great deal can be learned about the performance of the brick veneer/steel stud wall system.
