"Test Report on Slender Walls" Published
The Structural Engineers Association of Southern California in conjunction with the Southern California Chapter of the American Concrete Institute recently completed an extensive research program on tall, slender walls.
"The tests on full-scale walls of concrete tilt-up, clay brick masonry, and concrete block masonry demonstrated there is no validity for fixed height-to-thickness limits," said James E. Amrhein, S.E., executive director of the Masonry Institute of America, based in Los Angeles.
In addition to the elimination of the hit restriction, the design techniques are the same for all types of units, whether they are concrete tilt-up, concrete block masonry, clay brick masonry or hollow brick. "This is a tremendous step forward," Amrhein said.

New Glossary Released on Concrete Terminology
A new glossary of Cement and Concrete Terminology has been published by the American Concrete Institute and is available through the auspices of the Concrete Industry Association Executives.
The glossary is an authoritative source for answers to most terminology questions, ranging from Abram's Law to zero slump. In between there are definitions for cement, portland (not a brand name) and concrete made with portland cement. There are 43 other types of concrete listed.

Oklahoma Masonry Advancement Fund Scholarship
