New System Delivers Ready-mixed Mortar to Job Site, Trowel-ready
A revolutionary system that allows mortar to be delivered to construction sites trowel-ready for application has crossed the border from Canada and is beginning to make sound waves in the American building industry.
Called "Mortar Life," the product was introduced to the U.S. market through North American Mortar Supply Co., Inc. of Canada. It is a special blend of additives that is mixed with Portland cement, lime and sand to produce mortar.
Recently it was selected as a key masonry ingredient in the construction of 211 Madison Avenue, a 12-story luxury residential condominium under construction in New York City.
According to Theodore Merritt, president of Merritt Sales of Flemington, N.J., national sales representative for North American Mortar Supply, Mortar Life has been successfully used in Canada for the past four years and in Germany for the past 10 years.
"Mortar Life will be to the mortar industry what pre-mixed concrete was to the cement industry fifty years ago," he says. "The cement industry found out years ago that pre-mixing is more efficient than mixing at the site. We believe that Mortar Life will have the same impact on the masonry industry."
Pre-mixed, trowel-ready Mortar Life mortar is poured from mortar-mixing truck to masonry container at the job site. The product is said to have improved bonding capability and will last up to 48 hours.
Merritt explained that Mortar Life is mixed in concrete and block manufacturing plants by masonry and cement companies which often use sophisticated, computerized weighing techniques to ensure consistency in quality.
"All materials are accurately batched and each batch undergoes a battery of tests before delivery, with test cylinders preserved for nine and 28-day testing." Merritt said.
"The ready-mix mortar is then delivered to job sites and will last up to 48 hours, as compared with about 24 hours for conventional mortar."
Merritt added that Mortar Life mortar's strong bonding ability is three times that of conventional mortar and also reduces the migration of water through walls.
