82-year-old Courthouse Gets New Life
"Better than new" is the way some people describe the thoroughly restored 82-year-old, brick and limestone Grand Traverse County Courthouse in Traverse City, Mich. Originally designed by Rush, Bowman and Rush in the late 1800s, the historic structure was recently redesigned by two Chicago-based architectural firms, Historic Resources and Architects International. Missing roof ornaments and cornices have been replaced, the masonry tuckpointed and the surfaces cleaned, and the arch rebuilt with new oak doors framed in glass. "The conservation program is an example of recycling at its best," says James M. Peterson, managing partner of Architects International. The $1.5 million project was completed in June, 1981, on schedule and $70,000 under budget. Tezak Co., Traverse City, was the general contractor.
