Silicate Mortar for Chimney Lining
An inorganic potassium silicate based mortar was utilized to install the independent brick lining of the newest and tallest (475 ft.) chimney at Toledo Edison's Bay Shore, Ohio Station. Sauer- eisen Cements' Corrosion-Resisting Mortar No. 65 was used in the chimney, which serves four coal-fired boilers. The lining is subjected to temperatures from 250°F to 300°F as well as to sulfuric acid mist and condensates and moisture produced by the coal fuel.
No. 65 was used at a maximum % in. joint thickness to place the double-sized, hard-burned clay ASTM C-279-54 bricks of the 23 ft. ID lining. After nearly two years of operation, the Sauereisen mortar continues to serve satisfactorily.

structures as well as for structures using other building materials."
The passive solar team will complete its work in stages, focusing primarily on one type of building at a time. The fruits of the team's labors will include a series of booklets illustrating the building types and outlining their life-cycle costing. Eventually, this will serve as the basis for an IMI slide presentation which can be used by local/regional masonry promotion institutes and other masonry industry or- ganizations.
Based on the initial development of the four basic building types, the team anticipates extending the design process to include a midrise commercial buiding and a single-story commercial structure.
According to Beiner, "Our ultimate goal is to educate the builder, building owner, and the designer to look at total long-range passive solar building costs and not just the initial costs-especially in light of the rapid increases in energy expenses. We are confident that the report will show that with total masonry construction, the long-term cost effectiveness in passive solar is far superior. Our hard data and step-by-step explanations should convince the people who make decisions on materials that masonry is the way to go."
