California landmark. It is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Old Town Restored
One of the most popular attractions for visitors to San Diego is Old Town, the first European settlement in California. Since 1967, when the state provided $2.5 million to buy six blocks in the heart of Old Town to recreate the Mexican/early American period from 1821 to 1872, this historic section has flourished.

The area is filled with points of interest, interpretive displays, quaint shops and early California-style restaurants. A green line painted on the streets leads the way to historical landmarks.

Margaritas, the classic salt-rimmed Mexican tequila drink, come in three sizes at many Old Town restaurants, and make a good accompaniment for tortilla chips and salsa on the patio at one of Old Town's cafes.

And There's More...
A visit to San Diego without taking in the fascinating sights of Tijuana, Mexico, is almost unthinkable. Situated 17 miles south of downtown San Diego, this bustling city of more than 700,000 is a cosmopolitan mixture of Western and Latin cultures. Old Spanish-styled buildings stand beside modern linear edifices. Dirt roads run parallel to superhighways, and traditional religious lifestyles give way to liberated women, fashionable clubs, and the sophistication of the '80s.

Dozens of curio shops line Tijuana's main street, Avenida Revolucion. Here one may buy all sorts of colorful handicrafts for which Mexico is famous.

Along the streets, mariachis perform and vendors sell brightly colored paper flowers, tamales and jewelry. Photographers stand on street corners with burros painted in zebra stripes, offering to take tourists' pictures.

In addition to the curio shops, there are a number of fine import stores selling every type of import imaginable from throughout the world. One may purchase French clothing by Givenchy. Italian clothing by Rene. Israeli sportswear by Diva. One may also buy crystal from England and France, china from Spain and Italy, and shoes, purses and leather jackets from Italy.
