University of Calgary-Environmental Design
Principal Investigator: Prof. T. G. Lee.
Current Objectives: Use of Masonry In Solar Housing.
A unique church in Calgary has been designed using masonry walls as a radiant heat panel. To test the efficiency of this type of construction and obtain data for future designs, the wall will be instrumented and temperature patterns carefully analyzed.
University of New Brunswick
Principal Investigators: Profs. John Dawe and Robert McLaughlin.
Current Objectives: Masonry Shear Walls.
Another new project has been initiated at the university where a graduate student has begun a study on the behavior of masonry shear walls. A testing rig is being developed at the university and some preliminary small-scale tests are underway.
Nova Scotia Technical University
Principal Investigator: Prof. Julius Potyondy.
Current Objectives: Crack Development Due to Non-uniform Freezing.
Wetting and freezing are among the most important causes of deterioration of masonry in Atlantic Canada. Critical problems, for example, arise in exposed chimneys of residential and industrial construction. This project will attempt to establish the major factors involved in this phenomenon, classify local materials, and recommend improvements.
McGill University
Principal Investigator: Prof. Carl Turkstra.
Current Objectives: Development of a Limit States Design Code In Masonry.
Masonry research at McGill was initiated several years ago with a study of wall capacity. Since that time, attention has moved toward the general problem of masonry structural design and development, and a new limit states design code. Available research has been extensively reviewed and a comprehensive safety index analysis undertaken. In addition, a preliminary draft code has been prepared and circulated for review by appropriate code groups.
Summary
In future years the Council hopes to expand its activities to encourage research in other universities and to broaden the scope of work to include, among other avenues, university architectural departments.
