Elegant Aztec Restaurant to Feature
Extensive Use of Decorative Block

The atmosphere of historic Aztec temples, pyramids and cafes of thousands of years ago will be recreated in Costa Mesa, Calif. with the scheduled September opening of the elegant Copa de Oro Restaurant. Lee & Sakahara Associates, AIA, Costa Mesa, are architects and planners for the project, which is believed to be the first Aztec-motif dining establishment in the nation. Featuring stepped ziggurat masonry walls and reliefs, the walls will be faced with Arizona sandstone capped with a custom-designed parapet of frieze block. The building will be further enhanced by extensive use of greenhouses, sidewalk cafe patios, colorful awnings and parasols. Seven skylights will join the outdoors and indoors. Polished brass will replace the solid gold of ancient Aztecs, but other materials will retain complete authenticity. Torre Construction Co., Inc., Newport Beach, is the general contractor.

Frank Lloyd Wright Addition Cited

The addition to a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Glenview, III., received an Award of Excellence in recent architectural competition sponsored by the Illinois State Council ARA, Society of American Registered Architects.

The original home, now the Carr residence, was 1,950 sq. ft. and additions expanded it to 3,200 sq. ft. The objective was to integrate the new additions so that only careful investigation could discern where the original building ends and the new begins.

Meticulous care was taken to match every detail of the existing building. Solid and pierced masonry units were custom-made to match the warm color, size and texture of the original units. Mahogany was selected to match the existing ceiling, wall and millwork material as closely as possible. Hardware, glazing, flagstone floors and copper details were duplicated.

Busche & Markson, Inc., Mt. Prospect. III., was the architect. The building's owner served as general contractor.
