United Glazed Opens
Plant in Alabama

United Glazed, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Burns & Russell Co., Baltimore, Md., has opened a 24,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility on a 8.6-acre site in Selfield Industrial Park, Selma, Ala.

According to Burns & Russell vice president Russell F. Rich, the plant will produce "Spectra-Glaze" glazed masonry units. The raw concrete block used in the glazing process will be produced by Selma Concrete Products, just across the road from United Glazed. The finished product provides a decorative and impervious wall finish for concrete block buildings.

The Burns & Russell Co. was established in 1790, specializing in the manufacture of fine face brick, architectural terra cotta, ornamental statuary, and other clay products.

Standards InfoBriefs will be sent free to ASTM members and customers. Write to ASTM, Box 8402, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

Tile Council Updates
Installation Manual

The 1982 Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation, a manual for contractors, architects, engineers and specifications writers, is available from the Tile Council of America.

The 32-page manual simplifies and standardizes specifications for ceramic tile installations. Quick-reference details, outlines and charts cover most installation methods, and the biannual updating of the material ensures that the data is current and accurate.

A sample copy of the manual is available for $1.00 to cover postage and handling from the Tile Council of America, P.O. Box 326, Princeton, NJ 08540. Volume discounts are offered.

Construction Contracting
Revised Upwards

As a result of falling interest rates and the step-up of public works spending, the level of this year's construction contracting is now expected to reach $178.3 billion, or 15% greater than 1982. The figure is almost $11 billion more than predicted six months ago.

This forecast is contained in the first scheduled update of 1983 Dodge/Sweet's Construction Outlook published by McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co.

ANSI Publishes Catalog

The 1983 edition of the Catalog of American National Standards has been published and is available from the American National Standards Institute.

The 192-page reference lists all current ANSI-approved standards-approximately 10,000 in all. The standards establish dimensions, ratings, terminology and symbols, test methods, and performance and safety requirements for materials, equipment, and products ranging from abrasives to zippers.

Institute members and libraries that serve the general public receive the catalog and its supplements free.

Nonmembers may obtain a copy for $10 from ANSI's Sales Department, 1430 Broadway, New York, NY 10018.

CONSTRUCTION RISE
continued from page 13

boosted the seasonally adjusted Dodge Index of construction contract value 10% to 131 (1977 = 100), after February's temporary setback to 119.

In 1983's first quarter, the Dodge Index-the leading indicator of building materials shipments and construction employment-averaged 126 for a 5% gain over last year's final quarter. This was nearly a 30% advance from the cyclical low point which occurred in the second quarter of 1982.

Short and sweet is
better than long gone

Often the more words you write the less clear your message becomes. Take this list, for example, compiled by Grassroots, of the number of words in these writings from the past:
• The Lord's Prayer, 56 words.
The Gettysburg Address, 266 words.
The Ten Commandments, 297 words.
The 23rd Psalm, 118 words.
the 1966 US Government Order on Cabbage Prices, 26,911 words.
