Foam Sealant Keeps Masonry Insulation Where it Belongs

A proven method of preventing masonry insulation leakage during block wall and retrofit construction has been developed by the Construction Products Division of W. R. Grace & Co. The procedure was the brainstorm of Kate Driscoll, product manager, Zonolite Masonry Insulation, and Mick Toben, product manager, Polycel 100 Foam Sealant.

"We were faced with an increasing situation," Driscoll said. "The free-flowing characteristics of our masonry insulation, our biggest selling feature due to ease of application and excellent insulating qualities, tends to work against you during retrofit projects. Preventing masonry insulation leakage has been an objective of ours for some time. We're very excited about this. The procedure is easy to perform and should be a boon to mason contractors.

The Polycel sealant is injected into the wall through a series of holes drilled in the middle of each block cavity around the desired opening. The holes should be plugged with plastic screw-in type anchors after each application of sealant. After allowing the sealant to expand and cure for 24 hours, the cavities of each block within the sealed perimeter can be broken. The new opening is achieved with minimal masonry insulation leakage.

The method is ideal for use during new and retrofit construction when installing recessed junction boxes, electrical outlets, piping penetrations, doors and windows. Polycel expands and solidifies the insulation. After allowing the Polycel to cure for 24 hours, break the cavities of each block within the sealed perimeter. The new opening is achieved with minimal masonry insulation leakage.

In response to requests for retrofit application ideas, the Construction Products Division of W. R. Grace & Co. has produced a step-by-step guide "How to keep masonry insulation where it belongs."
