Drew Lindstrom (left) receives the sixth annual Ebeling Scholarship from mason contractor Robert F. Ebeling, in whose honor the $850 award is named.

Kenneth Grabowski (left) receives the fifth annual Masonry Institute of Michigan Scholarship worth $850 from the Institute's chairman, Dwight Lewis.

The Masonry Institute of Michigan has awarded $850 scholarships to three students in the School of Architecture at Lawrence Institute of Technology, Southfield, Mich.

The winners are: Kenneth Grabowski, 21, Dearborn Heights; Drew Lindstrom, 34, Ann Arbor, and Mitch Miller, 23, Grand Blanc.

Grabowski and Lindstrom are seniors at LIT. Miller is in the school's fifth-year program leading to a professional degree in architecture.

Two of the scholarships are named in honor of longtime Detroit-area mason contractors-James R. Snyder and Robert F. Ebeling-in recognition of their years of service to the masonry industry. Snyder is president of J. R. Snyder Co., Inc., Wixom, and Ebeling is chairman of Ebeling & Hicks, Inc., Romeo.

The scholarships were announced by Karl Greimel, dean of LIT's School of Architecture (the nation's largest in terms of undergraduate enrollment), and Dwight Lewis, chairman of the Masonry Institute. Selection was by a committee composed of members of both organizations.

May Construction Sets New Record

Contracting for new construction soared to an all-time high in May, with contracts totaling $18.9 billion, according to McGraw-Hill's F. W. Dodge Division.

The month's newly started construction lifted the seasonally adjusted Dodge Index to a record 148, up 15% from April's 129. The previous high of 143 was reached in February, 1979, just before the era of wildly gyrating interest rates.

"May was one of those months when everything came up pluses for the construction industry," said George A. Christie, v.p. and chief economist for Dodge. "Across-the-board advances in housing, nonresidential building and public works construction got the added support of a $2.1 billion electric power plant started in Utah. But May would have been a strong month even without this exceptionally large job."
