Award of Excellence-Meadowvale Cemetary Office, Brampton, Ontario. Architect & Consulting Engineer: Wilson Newton Roberts Duncan. General Contractor: Ivey Dreger Construction Ltd. Mason Contractor: J. A. Albanese Stone Work Contractors Ltd. Unit Masonry Producer: North Ontario Natural Field Stone Ltd.

Jury's Comment: This unpretentious building has had the problems solved apparently effortlessly. A fine allocation of a modest budget ensures that everything counts. The siting on gently rolling terrain amongst mature trees is superb. The simple angled planes of natural fieldstone emphasize and reinforce the contours while visually containing the landscape features. The principal volumes and spatial relationships flow naturally from the dynamic forms of the enclosing walls. The architects have avoided fashionable trends and have carefully executed a very good building. The craftsmanship is good with very well-built masonry. This building will be a pleasure to use and enjoy for many years.

Award of Merit-1111 Flint Road Building Complex, North York, Ontario Architect: Melvin Satok. Consulting Engineer: A. A. Rottmann & Associates Ltd. General Contractor: Minuk Construction & Engineering Ltd. Mason Contractor: Gorewood Masonry Ltd. Unit Masonry Producer: Richvale Block & Ready-Mix.

Jury's Comment: The jury unanimously approved of this entry. Partly because this building type is so often a cliche-ridden monstrosity where the ever-present economic pressures control everything. But this building brings dignity to the genre. Here is dignity without pomposity; the simple device of a plain band of color both cheers the eye and still performs a necessary architectural use of holding the masses together.
