Minnesotans Present "Excellence In
Masonry Design & Construction" Awards

The Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association presented its second annual "Excellence In Masonry Design & Construction" awards recently during its seventh annual state convention held in Minneapolis. The award-winning projects, one in the residential division and one in the commercial division, were judged on how the masonry aspects of the buildings enhanced the overall design and construction of the projects.

Residential Design Award-Elwell Residence, Fridley, Minn.

The residential design award went to architect George E. Mansfeldt for his imaginative home in Fridley. Tim Brickner was the general contractor and Fireplace Construction Co. the mason contractor. The home, owned by Tom Elwell, features brick construction throughout. Its exterior appearance is enhanced by a full brick front, brick steps, brick planters, and unique brick-patterned inserts in the driveway. The home's interior features a brick floor in the sun-room, designed for effective passive solar use. The adjoining kitchen has a brick island and a walk-in fireplace with a cook top and barbecue, plus four side walls and an arched doorway of brick design. Next to the fireplace is a brick bar, and the adjacent sunken sitting room has an attractive quarter-round brick fireplace with a heat collector. An exposed brick chimney rising through the house from the kitchen is viewed from two floors and complements the curved staircase.

Commercial Design Award-Centel Building, Burnsville, Minn.

In the commercial design award selection, the winning architectural firm was Waters, Cluts & O'Brien for its design of the Centel Building, located in the Burnhaven Executive Office Park in Burnsville. Kraus Anderson was the general contractor and Jesco, Inc. the mason contractor. This three-story, 48,000 sq. ft. building was constructed during the past harsh winter and was protected entirely by a polyethylene enclosure. Built of Endicott dark iron spot brick with chocolate colored mortar, the structure is actually two buildings connected by a glass atrium. The atrium utilizes the exposed brick on the interior to provide continuity of surfaces and building image. The building's predominant feature is the third-floor cantilevers projecting approximately 20 ft. past the two-story building beneath. The two brick wall faces meet at a 45-degree point on the west end overlooking scenic Earle Lake. Other design features include a three-story-high atrium of exposed brick with matching brick floor pavers and stair towers with curved brick walls, and ribbon windows of reflective glass highlighted with sloped sills made from the matching brick pavers. In key areas of the building, such as stair wells, elevator shafts, curved walls and window sill structures, concrete masonry units were used to provide a rigid back-up system to the brick facade.
