Las Vegas, located just 30 miles from the construction site, was designated as railhead for the enormous project. An engineering marvel, the concrete dam is 727 feet high and 660 feet thick at its base. It tamed the Colorado and stores two years' average flow of the river. Best of all, it is providing Las Vegas with an abundance of that precious resource-water.
Today both visitors and residents enjoy the benefits of Lake Mead. In addition to providing unlimited aquatic recreational opportunities, the 100-mile-long lake serves as a vital water source in quenching the community's increasing thirst. The recently completed second phase of the Southern Nevada Water Project will be capable of providing Las Vegas with enough Lake Mead water to satisfy its needs through the year 2010.
That water further guarantees that Nellis Air Force Base, located on the northeast boundary of Las Vegas, will continue to be a vital link in America's defense network. It also is a basic ingredient in Las Vegas' current efforts at developing a more diverse economic base by attracting clean industries.
Today the aquifer combined with the waters of Lake Mead is Las Vegas' insurance policy for steady growth and the city's continuing commitment at enhancing its stature as the world's number one resort city.
Capital Trivia:
The Capitol building dome was modeled after the great dome of St. Peter's in the Vatican. Seventeen presidents have lain in state here and each president since Andrew Jackson has been sworn in here on Inauguration Day. The flags flying over the Capitol Building tell a message: when one flies on the north wing, it signifies the Senate is in session; over the south wing means the House is at work.
