Death Claims Oscar Person, MCAA Regional Vice Pres.
Oscar Person, MCAA Regional Vice President and one of the most active supporters of the Association for many years, died September 24, 1984. He was 78.
Mr. Person had served several terms as Vice President of Region H comprising California, Nevada and Hawaii prior to 1982, and was re-elected to that post earlier this year. He was a past president of a number of prominent masonry organizations on the West Coast-the Masonry Institute (San Francisco), the San Francisco Chapter of the California Conference of Mason Contractor Associations, the Masons and Builders Associations of San Francisco, and the Burlingame Rotary Club.
Most recently he was a trustee of the San Francisco Promotion Trust Fund, co-chairman of the Masonry Industry Advancement Committee, and chairman of the Masonry Industry Political Education Committee.
Mr. Person was born in Sweden and emigrated to the United States in 1926. Subsequently, on a return visit to his native land, he was awarded the Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden for his loyalty to and support of the Swedish community in the San Francisco Bay area.
Mr. Person started in the mason contracting business in 1936.

Report on Collective Bargaining Settlements
Major collective bargaining contracts settled in private industry during January to September, 1984 resulted in average wage adjustments of 2.5 percent in the first contract year, and 2.8 percent annually over the life of the contract, reports the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The last time the same parties bargained (two to three years ago, in most cases), average wage adjustments were 8.6 percent in the first year and 7.2 percent annually over the contract life.
Construction settlements, covering 420,000 workers, dampened overall wage adjustments in the first nine months of 1984. In construction, wage adjustments averaged 0.9 percent the first year and 1.2 percent annually over the life of the contracts. Wage adjustments in all other industries averaged 3.2 percent in the first year and 3.5 percent annually over the contract life.

Masonry Council to Sponsor Awards Program
The Illinois Indiana Masonry Council announced it will hold its annual Excellence In Masonry awards banquet at the Hamilton Hotel, Itasca, Ill., May 11, 1985.
Any registered architect or accredited mason contractor may enter predominantly masonry projects completed between January 1, 1981 and September 1, 1984. Submission of materials must be received by January 2, 1985, at the Council's headquarters, 1550 Northwest Hwy., Suite 201, Park Ridge, IL 60068.

Masonry Goes Bimonthly
Masonry magazine, official publication of MCAA and CMCA, will be published on a bimonthly schedule in 1985, beginning with the January/February issue, instead of the former seven times annually.
This move has been made to coordinate news of the Associations' activities more effectively and to help contain ever-rising printing, paper and mailing costs.
