Sarabond Case Settled
Against Dow Chemical Co.
A major lawsuit against Dow Chemical Co. involving Sarabond, a Dow product, has been settled in Green Bay, Wis., according to the plaintiff's attorney. The First Wisconsin Bank Building, which received a favorable settlement following pre-trial motions, claimed that Sarabond, a mortar-strengthening additive, caused cracks in the building's brick facade. Bill Dorigan, an attorney with the Minneapolis law firm of Stacker & Ravich representing the First Wisconsin Bank, contended that Sarabond deteriorates after construction and frees a chemical that accelerates corrosion of steel that is in contact with the mortar, including imbedded steel reinforcement rods. Dorigan's firm represents several other building owners throughout the country who have similar Sarabond problems. He estimates that 20 to 30 lawsuits are pending against Dow involving structural problems.
