Martini Honored as Man of Year In Construction
Clyde F. Martini, business manager of Bricklayers Local No. 1 of Missouri, recently was presented the St. Louis Construction Industry Man of the Year award by the St. Louis Construction News & Review newspaper and the PRIDE Organization at a luncheon in St. Louis. He was recognized for his encouragement of mason contractors and journeymen in working together and promoting their common cause for the future of the St. Louis masonry industry.
Martini accepted the award in the name of the Bricklayers Local Union, the Laborers locals, the Mason Contractors Association of St. Louis, and the St. Louis area material suppliers.
Beer Breaks Ended at Anheuser-Busch
Beginning March 1, 1986, drinking beer at work, a century-old tradition at Anheuser-Busch Co., will come to an end. Workers at the company's 11 breweries will no longer get free pick-me-ups during breaks. Instead, they will get two free cases of beer a month, to be consumed in their own homes.
Putting the workplace on the wagon was one of the terms of a new three-year contract negotiated between Anheuser-Busch and the Teamsters Union. "While not everyone is happy about losing an old tradition, there wasn't much we could do, considering the way society feels these days about drinking," said James Babb, secretary of the Brewers & Malsters Local 6. Workers will miss the freebies particularly those who drank a case a day.
Anheuser-Busch has come out against beer bans and wine advertising criticism, saying it supports moderation in drinking. But, drinking at work, they feel, has become "inappropriate."
