The Danish House

Editor:

Denmark became the first country to construct an energy-efficient, pre-fabricated, single-family house in Brookhaven's International Village in Upton, Long Island.

"The Danish House" was officially dedicated on May 21, 1985, by Danish minister for housing Niels Bollmann and Donna R. Fitzpatrick, acting assistant secretary, Conservation and Renewable Energy, Department of Energy.

In addition to the Danish house, the International Village will consist of 10 to 12 houses from other nations. Future houses will, like the Danish house, be exponents for typical low-energy, prefabricated, single-family housing from the country concerned, decorated in accordance with the prevalent style of the country, as done in the Danish house.

In the weekend of June 1-2, 1985, the house was opened to the public. Approximately 4,000 people chose to spend part of their weekend to see what the Danish building sector has to offer. The immense interest shown has effected that the house will again be opened to the public on seven consecutive Sundays from July 14 to August 25, 1985.

For your information we enclose a copy of the publication "Danish Housing/Danish Living" (published in connection with the opening of the house) which can be obtained from this Consulate General free of charge.

The upcoming energy and environmental testing programs for the Danish house are presently being formulated by BNL, Denmark's National Building Research Institute and the Technical University of Denmark. The house and its various components will be tested for a three-year period starting at the end of 1985.

Statue of Liberty's Pedestal Design Debated

Editor:

I noted with particular interest the full-page ad on page 18 and the article on page 33 concerning the Statue of Liberty's masonry pedestal (Masonry, May/June, 1985). I have been researching the pedestal for the past year and would like to point out that the articles you ran claim that Gustave Eiffel designed the pedestal.

While Gustave Eiffel may have provided engineering data, it was Paris-educated American architect Richard Morris Hunt who in 1881 was chosen to design the pedestal. And it was Lt. Gen. C. P. Stone, Engineer-In-Chief, who designed the "foundation mass" for the pedestal. Architect Hunt was famed for the great homes he had designed for the millionaires of New York and Newport, R.I.

If you would like an authoritative article on the subject, I would be happy to write one for Masonry. I have extensive research materials on the pedestal's history and construction.
