Granite Landmark Rises in Cleveland
Cleveland's new landmark, Sohio's 45-story pink granite tower, is the city's largest in office space (1,500,000 sq. ft.) and second tallest structure. The office/retail complex features an eight-story granite-and-glass atrium with retail shops, restaurants and garden area.
Situated on 2.5 acres overlooking Public Square, the building will provide Standard Oil of Ohio office space for its headquarters staff of 3.000 employees.
Gilbane/Polytech, the general contractor (a joint venture of Gilbane Building Co. and Polytech Corp.) and Standard Art Marble & Tile Co., were responsible for the prefabrication and erection of the integrated, complete wall system comprised of 2½ in. of Foamular extruded polystyrene insulation encased between an exterior wall of 1% in. of pink Texas granite and a 3%-in. concrete inner wall.
One of the largest buildings to date featuring this unique pre-cast, three-part, curtain-wall system, it is estimated that the 3,753 sections of light pink granite would cover 11 football fields if taken off the $200 million building.
