Rosalynn Carter Aids in Restoration
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter applies weatherproofing to the exterior of an 80-year-old tenement that is being restored by urban homesteaders in New York City. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter came to New York to work with 19 families who are renovating the six-story, brick building on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Chem-Trete weatherproofing, donated by the manufacturer, Dynamit Nobel of America, was sprayed on a series of test patches during the reconstruction. The material penetrates into the brick and mortar and is said to form a moisture-proof barrier that prevents intrusion by water, snow, ice, airborne pollutants and acid rain.
This housing rehabilitation is sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that has sponsored similar self-help projects. Habitat purchases the dwelling and the homesteaders rebuild it. This $700,000 project has been partially funded by contributions from corporations, church groups, trade unions and individuals.

An easy-to-use, air-driven pressure pointing system from Britain is said to provide a cost-effective, high-speed alternative to manual mortar joint replacement.
Capable of handling most foamed and non-foamed grouts in a wide range of viscosities, the Ele-Reader Pressure Pointing System has a positive displacement pump for the grout. Compressed air is introduced into the mix at the nozzle, and a regulator valve ensures the correct nozzle pressure (conventional systems have pressurized tanks).
These innovations are said to permit the use of a higher viscosity mix, which is advantageous in overhead work and gives a continuous output for thorough joint penetration, according to the manufacturer, Ele International Ltd. of Hertfordshire. England.
