THE WORKLINE
QUESTION: I have an employee who comes to me with problems that she should be able to solve herself. I want to be supportive of my employee, but it's hard for me to feel positive about your work if you come to me to discuss issues that you have the power to resolve. Help me to understand why you need help with this." Let your employee know that it's your job to help her become more self-sufficient.
QUESTION: I used to feel like an important member of the team, but now I notice that I am often not consulted on decisions and my suggestions are frequently ignored. What should I do?
ANSWER: An organization sometimes outgrows people who were competent during its early stages of development but who cannot adjust to changes that occur as it matures. By recognizing your early warning signals of frustration and anxiety, you can find solutions to your problems while others still have positive feelings about you and are eager to help you.
There are no simple answers for a complex problem like this, but here are a few approaches to consider:
* Ask others for their honest input and try to find out if you really are out of pace; if so, how much and why;
* Listen to others' suggestions for what you can do to change;
* Discuss the situation with a consultant or other outside person to get a different perspective; and
* Read and gather data to help determine what you can do to adjust to the situation.
If the adjustment does not seem worth it to you or the organization, consider getting involved in an area where your strengths are best used. You may be able to make a change within the organization.
QUESTION: I want to move into a leadership position within my company, but there aren't any openings. How can I prove to top management that I'm qualified so that when the time comes I'll be considered for a promotion?
ANSWER: A good leader addresses issues head-on so he can clearly understand the situation and begin to resolve it. Don't try to read the minds of those in charge. Show leadership skills by asking your boss what it takes to be considered for a management position, and ask other managers how you can best prepare for a leadership role. If they are unresponsive, take a management training course at your community college, enroll in a seminar, or read management books. Although you may not immediately be promoted, if you continually display leadership characteristics, management will take note and find a way to make use of your skills.
