MASONRY INSTITUTE OF DAYTON
PRESENTS ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS

The architectural firm of Endeco Associates captured the top prize-the Architectural Excellence Award for 1985 in the recent Excellence In Masonry Awards competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Dayton.

The firm was recognized for its design of the City of Dayton Fire Station #11, located in the historic South Park neighborhood. This project needed a design to be compatible with the character of the area and consistent with the local service functions provided by the owner. Masonry provided durable, easily maintained surfaces for both the exterior and interior.

The use of angular bays, gabled roofs and appropriate fenestrations developed design elements consistent with the neighborhood. The additional use of limestone sills, copings, lintels and identification elements along with the contrast of the brick provided the desired aesthetic character.

In addition to serving as a fire station, the building provides a neighborhood emergency shelter and 24-hour center for runaways. Harris Masonry was the mason contractor for the project.

In other presentations, the following firms also were recognized with awards:
* Award of Merit-Randolph D. Selov. Jr., AIA. for the Way International Performing Arts Center and Student Dormitory. New Knoxville, Ohio. Petersen Construction, mason contractor.
* Masonry Systems Award-Kleski & Associates, for the InterMed Building and Dover Medical Center, Dayton, Ohio. Anderson & Hester and KMCO, Inc., mason contractors.
* Award of Merit for Renovation-Lecklider-Jay, Architects, for the Reynolds & Reynolds Co. new facade and remodeling. F. E. Longstreth, mason contractor.

The guest speaker for this event was Robert Beiner, director of engineering for the International Masonry Institute, Washington, D.C., who also presented the awards.
