ASTM Seeks Members for New Subcommittee on Masonry Terminology

ASTM Committees C-12 on Mortars for Unit Masonry and C-15 on Manufactured Masonry Units have formed Subcommittees on Masonry Terminology, designated C12.08 and C15.08.

These subcommittees will coordinate and clarify definitions and notations used by C-12 and C-15 subcommittees, thus making it easier for testing laboratories, researchers, and designers to report and use testing results. New subcommittee members are sought to develop consistent definitions and notations for use in standards devoted to masonry materials, testing, and construction.

Interested persons should contact J. Gregg Borchelt, Masonry Institute of Houston/Galveston, 5100 Westheimer, Suite 200, Houston, TX 77056, 713/629-6024. Information is also available from ASTM Staff Manager Jim Dwyer, ASTM, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103, 215/299-5499.

Glossary on Concrete Terminology Released

The American Concrete Institute has released a new and expanded edition of Cement and Concrete Technology. This third edition provides more than 1,400 of the most used terms dealing with concrete.

Engineering Student Wins Masonry Scholarship

A scholarship in memory of Stewart Rutter, for many years with Lake Ontario Cement Ltd., was awarded to Edward A. Gazzola, a graduate student in the Department of Civil Engineering & Engineering Mechanics at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Gazzola was selected by the donor, Lake Ontario Cement, as recipient of the award because of the Civil Engineering Department's extremely active masonry research program. Gazzola is completing his master's degree on the research topic "Out-of-Plane Bending of Concrete Block Masonry."

Pictured with Gazzola (center) are Roy Post (left), general manager of Lake Ontario Cement, and Dr. Arthur C. Heidebrecht, dean of the McMaster Faculty of Engineering.
