According to the executive director of the Masonry Institute, which worked with the Ohio Department of Transportation in the conceptual stage, the wall cost $14 sq/ft., compared with $16 sq./ft. for a wood wall. Koehler says it took a "thorough and diligent promotional campaign" to convince the Ohio DOT that a brick wall would be suitable.

These efforts included retaining Dayton engineers Lockwood, Jones & Beals to design the wall that eventually was accepted by state engineers and the affected residents.

Course on Reinforced Masonry Structures

A two-day course on "Design and Construction of Reinforced Masonry Structures" will be presented at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., November 17-18. The instructor will be James E. Amrhein, S.E., executive director, Masonry Institute of America.

The course will provide information on brick and concrete block, mortar, grout and construction techniques. It also will cover methods of design for flexure, shear, vertical and lateral loads, including earthquake resistance design. Actual design problems will be presented and solved. The performance of structures in the Mexico City earthquake of September, 1985 (Masonry, January/February and March/April, 1986) also will be reviewed.
