Another danger of refractory work is the noxious gas that is sometimes trapped behind an oven liner. When the refractory bricklayer breaks open the old wall to start his repair work, he may be overcome by the fumes-another reason why it is important to work in teams.
Why do so many bricklayers choose this grueling work? Generally, it is steady, dependable employment-without the stops and starts of new construction.
As the saying goes, it's a tough, dirty job, but somebody has to do it. In this instance, it's the refractory bricklayers.
