aims to plug loopholes in antitrust statutes that permit partnerships to launch takeover bids without first notifying the government. The legislation goes further by requiring both controlling partners and general partners to give advance notice of a takeover attempt. Small acquisitions would be exempted.
But the legislation eases some current restrictions against directors serving on the boards of competing corporations. The current $1 million net-worth exemption for the sharing of directors would be increased to $10 million immediately.
A BILL REQUIRING ADVANCE NOTICE OF PLANT CLOSINGS IS NOW a hot issue. The measure mandates 60 days notice to employees before a factory is closed. This practice is already common among many of the country's largest firms. And the legislation is full of loopholes through which companies can escape. But the battle over the measure has taken on more symbolism than substance. Organized labor is vigorously promoting the bill in order to demonstrate its clout in a Democratic-run Congress. So, business is determined to beat it.
The real issue is the business community's fear-and labor's hope that the measure will be the first in a string of wins for unions. Labor has a long list of legislative proposals that would require more benefits from business-like a higher minimum wage, mandated health benefits, and parental leave.

The IRS will probably audit less than 2% of the 102 million individual returns filed last year. This percentage has been declining since the IRS has a tendency to audit only those returns that seem likely to produce a significant amount of revenue.
On a regional basis, your chances of being audited are greatest if you live in the West or Southwest, least in the Central States. If you live in Nevada, watch out-Nevada residents stand a greater risk of being audited than residents of any other state.
What's the best thing to do-play it safe and have your financial records in order-just in case you're one of the 2%.
