Insulated Cavity Walls
A WINNER IN CHICAGO

There is one category in which the City of Chicago can top the list of any other city in the country: Architecture.

One of the newest buildings on Chicago's famous Lake Shore Drive skyline, and one of the tallest cavity-wall structures in America is The New York. A three-phase residential complex located on a 3.27-acre site at Waveland Avenue and Lake Shore Drive. The entire development will eventually consist of two 49-story apartment towers, 46 townhouses, and complete parking, recreational and service facilities.

The first phase of the project is nearing completion. This 49-story, 655,000-square-foot apartment tower contains 44 residential and three commercial and mechanical floors as well as social facilities.

Amenities at The New York are as impressive as the building itself. Most apartments, regardless of size or location in the building, will offer private views of Lake Michigan and the skyline. The design of the apartments features 45 degree "rotated" floor plans to accommodate the views from private balconies and bedroom windows.

The New York, a multi-phase mixed use project being built at 3660 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, will eventually consist of two 49-story apartment towers, townhouses, and complete parking, recreational and service facilities. Phase One is scheduled to be completed in late 1987.

The complex is being developed by Development Management Group, a Chicago-based real estate company, for Waveland Associates Phase 1. The architects are Mann, Gin. Ebel & Frazier, Ltd., Chicago, and the associate architect for design is the Gruzen Partnership, New York City. Masonry on the project is by Crouch-Walker, Chicago, with the general contractor, Mayfair Construction Co.

While the buildings' amenities may be all that are desired and required by the service industry professionals that it is being targeted toward, it is the design of the building that first catches the eye. The textured brickwork facade of the structure complements its Belmont Harbor neighborhood persona, which is comprised largely of upscale high-rises, restored historic structures and the bordering Lincoln Park.

There were many factors taken into account when opting for the brick cavity-wall system for the building, in addition to the obvious aesthetic considerations. "By designing the building with a brick and

Finished section of wall at The New York project. Attractive, durable and energy efficient, the cavity-wall construction is a modern, cost-effective alternative to other methods of enclosure.
