St. Louis Contractor
Certification Program

Danny R. Overy, vice president of Allied Waterproofing Company, is the most recent person to be designated a Certified Mason Contractor by the Mason Contractors Association of St. Louis. He has been active in masonry construction in St. Louis for more than 20 years.

To become certified, Overy had to meet a minimum standard of experience and performance, including broad experience in contracting masonry construction, proof of insurability, and recommendations from construction owners, architects or general contractors. He also had to earn a passing grade on a comprehensive written examination.

The Mason Contractor Certification Examination tests a candidate's knowledge in seven broad areas. Just knowing how to lay brick is not enough, because the test covers construction contracts, fiscal and financial responsibilities, masonry materials, safety practices, and accident prevention.

TRAK Awarded Army
Forklift Contract

A Wisconsin construction equipment manufacturer that spent $500,000 several years ago on speculation to build a better rocket and munition handling forklift for the U.S. Army has won a $116 million contract to produce 1,638 of the units.

The Army contract was awarded to TRAK International, formerly Koehring Construction Equipment. The award was announced by Wisconsin 1st District Congressman, Les Aspin, East Troy. Aspin told TRAK officials that the Army had requested an option to build an additional 1,851 units that would extend funding for the contract to 1992 and total over $245 million.

The equipment will be especially useful for handling the Army's multiple launch rocket pods. Company officials noted that the Army's former forklift handling of the missile pods-lifting the pods from their containers and readying them for transport to the launchers-took 45 minutes in 1982. TRAK's newly designed forklifts reduced that time to one minute. The commercial version of variable reach rough terrain forklifts manufactured by TRAK International are marketed under the name SKY TRAK.

The Army's "SKY TRAK" machine is a self-propelled unit capable of traveling over 20 miles per hour. It lifts 6,000 lbs. at a distance of 15 feet and 4,000 lbs. at 23.5 feet. The Army's SKY TRAK forklift weighs 26,700 lbs. and is air transportable in the military's cargo planes.
