White House Restoration Continues
Restoration has started on the exterior north walls and part of the south wall of the White House. The restoration technicians of Ramco Technologies Inc. from Hartford, Connecticut will begin removing some 50 coats of paint from the sandstone walls.
This phase of a long-term restoration project marks the first time these particular sandstone walls have been exposed since 1797 when the White House was first painted. These walls undergoing paint removal will be kept bare until the spring of 1989. This will allow the porous stone to completely dry so that the new paint will better adhere to the walls. Scaffolding will remain until late summer when the paint removal will be completed. Repainting is scheduled for next spring.
The current work is part of a long-range exterior restoration program to repair and replace the deteriorated historic stonework, remove all exterior coatings of paint, re-point and seal masonry joints and then repaint. The East wall was restored in 1980 and in 1984 paint removal and stone repair were completed on the North Portico.
The project will be completed for the 1992 Bicentennial of the laying of the cornerstone of the "President's House." The White House has served as the home and office of every President since John Adams.
Prior to 1980, the White House was regularly painted every four years. Continued paint failure prompted the Chief Usher and the National Park Service in 1976 to request the National Bureau of Standards to undertake a study to recommend corrective action. Scientists from the National Bureau of Standards concluded in 1980 that the existing 30 to 50 layers of paint required complete removal in order to improve both the appearance and the cost of maintenance.
Historical records indicate that laborers working on the White House in 1797 first used whitewash as a sealer on the mansion's newly laid walls, thus making it a "white house" for the first time.
The original walls of the White House were severely damaged when it was burned during the War of 1812. Portions of the walls were replaced during the 1815-1817 reconstruction. The South Portico was added in 1824 and the North Portico in 1829.
The interior of the White House was renovated during the Truman Administration in 1948-1952.
