The new Mainframe Building of the Presbyterian Hospital in upper Manhattan and the architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), have been selected the winners of the Masonry Institute of New York and Long Island Excellence in Masonry Award. The award recognizes and acknowledges excellence in design including the multiple use of masonry materials and excellent workmanship.

The Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York is a 1485 bed tertiary care teaching hospital well known for its many specialized areas of patient care. The centerpiece of the newly consolidated institution is the new Mainframe building. The new 839,000 square foot building contains 745 patient beds with ancillary diagnostic and treatment areas including 22 new operating rooms. It also houses 48 radiology and imaging rooms and 74 intensive care beds.

The typical patient care floor has an area of 80,000 square feet and consists of four 36-bed patient care units for a total of 144 beds. The configuration of the plan assures operational efficiency by minimizing continued on page 29.
